ABOUT JASON CANTORO
Jason Cantoro was born, lives and works in Montréal and holds a bachelor of visual arts from the University of Québec. As co-founder of the Montréal based studio Sérigraphie Cinqunquatre, he has participated in two solo shows and more than 20 group exhibitions in Canada and the United States over the past five years. In 2008, Jason received a grant from the Art Council of Quebec for the creation of a wall mural and an accompanying documentary film.
Cantoro takes North American urban imagery, culture and social structures as starting points for densely layered landscapes. He mines images of the past and present for a nostalgic yet slightly unsettling remix where antique airplanes, roller coasters and motorcycles clash with stormy skies, marching armies and flocks of birds in spaces charged with potential. His visual exploration is inspired by the study of different printing techniques forcing the limits of each medium and merges painting, screenprinting and drawing.
